Annual Author’s Luncheon

Our 9th annual Local Author’s Luncheon was held on Saturday, January 30th, 2016 at the Chelsea Restaurant on Middle Street in downtown New Bern. This year’s featured authors were:

  • Brenda Harris – Poultry at Lavender College
  • Sam Love – Converging Waters
  • Leslie Tall Manning – GAGA
  • John Lee Martin – Zero to Sixty in Sixty Years
  • Bridget Platt – Daddy’s Deployed
  • Michael Richard – Tobit’s Dog
  • Simon Spalding – Food at Sea: Shipboard Cuisine from Ancient to Modern Times
  • Patricia Stroh – The ABCDEFG Disorder
  • Ed Wall – When the Bobber Jiggles

Proceeds from the luncheon enable a scholarship to women at Craven Community College targeted toward women who have had a gap between high school and college perhaps due to employment or child rearing, etc. Also a scholarship is given to a middle-school girl going to Science Camp in Havelock offered in the summer.


Community Women’s Event

All branch members and their guests are invited to attend a special Community Women’s Event in Havelock (Havelock Tourist and Event Center, 201 Tourist Center Dr., Havelock, NC).  AAUW Twin Rivers Branch and AAUW NC are part of a coaltion of women’s organizations sponsoring this event.

Program: Campus Sexual Assault Crisis on American Campuses
Member Judy Balsanek, MSW, ACSW, LCSW and Branch Public Policy Chair is in charge of the program.  Judy will share current data on Campus Sexual Assault, AAUW’s recent national legislative advocacy efforts at the White House and on Capital Hill, New government guidelines clarifying school reporting responsibilities for incidents of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault and stalking, and Efforts by AAUW student organizations at campuses across the country to raise awareness about sexual assault.

Member Ginny Mattern is in charge of the program on STEM education.  In addition, new member Deborah Rhymer will talk with us about helping with a local STEM project. (We are making a commitment to be finished by 1:30pm.)

Mary Peterson has scheduled a Special Total Membership Meeting to discuss the current status and future direction of our Branch. You are encouraged to attend and participate in critical Branch discussions, decisions and strategic planning.

Human trafficking is one of the fastest growing and most lucrative criminal industries in the world. And New Bern is no exception.

Join the Twin Rivers Branch of the American Association of University Women as we address this important issue.

What Branch Members Need to Do:

  1. Invite family and friends to the Event.
  2. Obtain Tickets from Connie or Judy if you do not already have Tickets from our April Branch Meeting or need additional Tickets.
  3. Sell Tickets BEFORE May 15.  Make a note of Ticket # and person attending (one per Ticket).  Obtain $10.00 fee per Ticket. Make checks payable to Twin Rivers Branch/AAUW, with 5/22 mtg on the memo line.
  4. Call OR email Connie with your sold Tickets information.  Let Connie know: Ticket # and name of person attending. (Connie will place your information on her Event Reservation List plus add to the Caterer Food List.)
  5. Place all Cash and/or Check Money received plus TOTAL Number of Tickets sold in ONE envelope.
  6. Mail envelope to our Branch Treasurer BEFORE the Event:  Ginny Mattern, 115 Friburg Rd., New Bern, NC 28562.

April Branch Meeting

Speaker:    Todd Bradley of Craven Early College

Twin Rivers Branch of AAUW will meet on Thursday, April 24th at the 7pm in the New Bern Craven County Library.  Todd Bradley, of Craven Early College, will speak about The Impact of Educational Funding Cuts by the State and the Current Programs at Craven Early College.  A business meeting will follow the program.
