Local Authors Luncheon and Benefit

Our Branch members as well as the New Bern community are invited to purchase tickets for a delicious lunch and program event with ten participating local authors held at a downtown historic restaurant.  After lunch each author presents information about their book.  This fundraising event highlights and draws attention to local authors and provides a venue for author book sales and guest purchase of autographed book copies.  Ticket sale proceeds support Scholarships for local Women and Girls.

It was voted (April 2012) to continue our buddy system for planning programs for the coming year. You will have a chance to sign up for the month of your choice.

Our Program Themes increase understanding of AAUW and promote AAUW’s Mission Statement: “Advancing equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research”.

Note to our Working Members: Oct. and March will be evening meetings. Dec.1 and Jan.19 are Sat. meetings. May is an evening dinner or picnic.  Our meeting schedule aims to include our working members.

December Branch Meeting and Holiday Luncheon

: We will have a short business meeting, followed by lunch, and a speaker from the Tryon Palace staff talking about the African American Jonkonnu Celebration.
Reminders:

    • Children’s Gift Opportunity: Since we did not vote on each of us donating a child’s book to The Little Red BookMobile this fall, please bring a child’s book if you wish to donate one.
    • The December Branch Meeting is when you get your tickets to sell for our AAUW Twin Rivers Scholarship Fund Raiser–The Local Author’s Luncheon will be Saturday, January 19, 2013.

February Branch Meeting

You are invited on Thursday, Feb. 28 from noon to 2pm to an LAF Luncheon* at Mary Peterson’s home, 6303 Gondolier Drive in Fairfield Harbour.

Directions:   Turn right off Broad Creek Rd. into Fairfield Harbor Entrance.Turn right at the stop sign onto Caracara Dr. Take the fourth left onto Pelican Dr. (there is a sign that points the way to Red Sail Park). Go way down Pelican, past the old club house on the left. Pass Santa Lucia Dr. and Crow’s Nest Ct. on the right.  Continue on Pelican Dr. until you get to the stop sign. Turn left on Gondolier Dr. Mary’s house is not too far down on the right side:  # 6303. It’s a gray house.

Branch Business Meeting will follow lunch.  We will discuss:

    • Branch finances
    • Do some strategic planning (set a few branch goals with a timeline)
    • Other items you feel are needed for “branch health”

This month we are not having a program so we have time for a real business meeting. Hope to see you here so you can make your voice heard. Note to our working members: Please feel free to e-mail us your comments and concerns before Feb. 28 so you have input too regarding raising dues or other branch matters.

This will be an evening dinner meeting and you are encouraged to bring friends you think might want to join AAUW as we celebrate Women’s History month at this meeting.

Co-Chairs Ginny Mattern and Wendy Curler invited three of the women featured in their library Women’s History Month display to attend the March branch meeting.  After dinner they’ll each give a short talk about their contributions:

    • Sgt. Major Holly Pratke will talk about women in the military
    • Theresa Lee and Donna Bradshaw will talk about their efforts in the community.

Be sure you visit the library during March and view the display case across from the book check-out desk as Wendy and Ginny have done an excellent job.

April Branch Meeting

What:           The Big AAUW Picture

Meeting topic will be The Big AAUW Picture and it will include the following:

  • A PowerPoint presentation we viewed at the state annual meeting from Julia Brown, our Board of Directors guest.
  • Distribution of information about candidates for AAUW leadership who are being voted on starting April 15 and ending in New Orleans at convention.  Please bring your most recent Outlook magazine which has on the back cover your member ID number and a voter pin number to the meeting.  After explanation of One Member, One Vote, you will have a chance to vote for our national officers at this meeting.
  • A few highlights from our state meeting which was April 12-13 in Burlington.
  • Also will give you an update of the NCWomen United Advocacy Day in Raleigh on April 9.  AAUW NC is a member of NCWomen United along with about 20 other women’s organizations that share our goals.

Bring a sandwich or salad.  Beverage and dessert to be provided by Mary.

We will have a Dinner Meeting at Morgan’s Restaurant in a quiet area of the first floor dining room. Members and guests will order off the menu.

Our speaker is Janice Allen of the NC Coastal Land Trust. She will speak about efforts to preserve land conservation along our coastal plains for recreational, environmental, scenic and historic value.
